About the Plain Writing Association
The purpose of the Plain Writing Association is to maintain this Internet-based clearinghouse of information documenting the history of plain-language legislation, and to provide easy access for government, organizations, businesses, and individuals to learn about and acquire computerized plain-language editing software.
The Plain Writing Association was established in response to the growing importance of, and interest in, the plain language movement. With the push for plain-language legislation in Congress—culminating in the recent passage of the Plain Writing Act—it was clear that the history of the legislation needed to be recorded, and the key legislative documents needed to be analyzed and made accessible to the public. (See, for instance, our Legislative History and Bill Comparisons projects.)
In addition, as the Plain Writing Act and other programs and initiatives are calling for clear, concise, and well-organized writing, the Plain Writing Association works with leading software distributors and manufacturers to make plain language editing software accessible to the public. The Plain Writing Association always welcomes input from the public—from suggestions for new projects to help with filling details in current projects (please use our contact form). We strive for precision and usefulness in all that we do.
