— from 2007 to 2010

Dissecting the House and Senate Bills
that Evolved into the Plain Writing Act of 2010

A Project of the Plain Writing Association

About | House Plain Language Bills, 2007-2010 | Senate Plain Language Bills, 2007-2010 |

This Project uses proofreading marks and linked-webpage comparisons to show how the various versions of the major plain writing bills of the last few years evolved into the Plain Writing Act of 2010.

The following bills, including original as well as amended versions, are covered in this project:

In the House: In the Senate:
Plain Writing Association / Plain Writing Act /

plain English star The two versions of Senate bill 574 (S. 574), Plain Language Act of 2009 [subsequently, Plain Writing Act of 2009]
      — introduced March 11, 2009

Each version of the Senate bill is compared with its previous version, or with the Senate bill in the previous term. And each version of the House bill is compared with its previous version, or with the House bill in the previous term. Each version includes, in red, struck-through lettering, the words that were in the previous version but left out of the particular current version; each version also includes, in green lettering, the words that were newly added in the particular current version. Links are designed to allow the reader easily to go back and forth among the various versions, and within the particular Sections, of the respective bills.

To begin, select either the Senate Plain Language Bills link or the House Plain Language Bills link.

NOTE
As a companion to this project, see our Legislative History project, which presents a history of the legislative process by which the various plain language bills struggled through Congress and ultimately resulted in passage of the Plain Writing Act of 2010.
